1 9 9 8 Severe Weather Event
Alabama
Looking Back to 1998
My first experience of the tragic devastation of a tornado was the 1998 Alabama F-5. We flew there to photograph/ document the aftermath of this large twister. It was for me the most humbling of experiences. The giant red striped American Red Cross tents were the first things I saw as I approached the 1998 Alabama F-5 tornado damage area. The devastation the communities suffered in the wake of the tornado was horrific. The American Red Cross was there to help, with food, water, a place for shelter to the homeless, and much much more. Please give to the Red Cross, their work during such events is phenomenal.
Photo Left - I walked up to this family who were burning the last of the ruins of their home, I was just about to ask if I could please take their photo when a small black dog began barking furiously at me. This man knelt down to the dog and started crying holding his dog. I was devastated that I had intruded on this family and apologized, then the man looked up at me and said "No, No you don't understand" He said that the little dog was so traumatized by the impact of the Alabama (1998) tornado that the dog had not as much uttered a sound in the last few days, he said that the dog had literally just wandered around showing no emotion. That is until I walked up and the dog began barking. I am still overwhelmed with emotion to this day over this photo. Photo Right - The deadly Alabama tornado destroyed nearly everything in its path, fortunately no one was killed in this home.
