April 23, 2007

Yesterday evening we pulled into the parking lot of the Hampton Inn where we stayed in Amarillo, and looking at Jeff's chase vehicle, a black avalanche, we could see the front right tire was FLAT.   So this morning we were up at 6:30 am taking the truck to Wal-Mart Service Center to get the flat fixed.  Unfortunately the tire could not be fixed and Jeff had to purchase a new tire.  Just a part of storm chasing.

We intercepted an incredible storm in Comanche County, KS this storm began producing several tornadoes near the town of Protection, KS.  We will be posting more photos and video in the next day or so....very late and have to set up for tomorrow's big outbreak.

When we go storm chasing I like to try and stop at the historical mile markers on the way.   We see some of the most beautiful country that you can imagine so throughout the 2007 Storm Chasing Web Logs I will be posting some interesting facts about the areas we storm chase through.

Many thanks to the Harper County Sheriff's Department and in particular to Derek Seevers who, the next day located the billfold of one storm chaser (which we won't name) who had used his billfold to prop the video camera on a lonely fence post just off the road.  And left the billfold to be attended to by the cattle in above photo.  Thanks to GPS coordinates we could let the sheriff's department know the exact location of the billfold.  Ironically, there was not a cow chewing on it as we had imagined but it was still sitting on the fence post out in plain site clear until the next evening.  Great story...after freaking out about losing it of course.

Above Photo L to R West of Protection KS a tornado begins to form and we are getting just under golf ball size hail,...As the wallcloud develops a tornado drops from the side of the main wall cloud.  I just purchased less than a week ago a new Nikon D80 and had not read all of the manual, this is a GREAT camera...simply operator error.  I am so used to the Canon's and Canon lenses so I apologize for the quality of these photos...I finally had to just put the camera down and film. Above Photo L to R...This was an incredible day, I have never seen so many tornadoes touch down in such a concentrated area. One after the other after the other.

Above Photo L to R....The tornado in the Left frame above touched down briefly and then lifted the tornado in the background to the right of the wider one proved to be the show stopper and became the tornado on in the Right frame.

After a crazy day of chasing it is always comforting to find your hotel has an added feature in the hotel room .  But I must say the room itself was really nice and clean...you can't ask for more than that.
